Principal's Message

February 2012

It is hard to believe the speed at which this school year has appeared to move. The first semester is over, and we are past the midpoint of our Winter athletic season. We have all of the fun and excitement of Spring sports, Prom and graduation, among many other things to soon enjoy. With all of these great extracurricular opportunities ahead of us, the semester change allows us time for reflection on the previous semester. I encourage you to do this with your student.
If your child had a successful first semester of the school year, have them look at the factors that led to that success. Were they diligent in their work? Did they study and complete all assignments, both at school and home? Were they focused on their studies and have a clear goal in mind for each class? Were they in school on a regular basis and absent only in emergencies? Did they seek help from teachers, guidance counselors or others if they faced challenges in the classroom? Did they participate in extracurricular activities, such as clubs and athletics? In order to become a stronger learner, students should ask themselves these questions on a regular basis.
The beauty of a semester schedule such as ours lies in the opportunities it provides students to change a course action if necessary. If your child struggled in classes and did not find success in every class during the first semester, he or she can turn over a new leaf for the new semester. It offers a fresh start and a time to get on the correct path towards an education and a high school diploma. In these uncertain economic times, where high school aged students may compete with experienced adults for jobs, a high school diploma may be the entry point for employment. Talk to your child and encourage them to make the necessary changes.
