Peer Meditation
Peer Mediation is a process in which neutral persons help others resolve conflicts. Our peer mediators at CRMS receive special training in the causes of conflict, understanding feelings, effective communication skills, active listening, problem solving and getting to know themselves. We believe that our mediators should posses qualities such as fairness, honesty, trustworthiness, maturity and integrity. The mediators are trained by Mrs. Molock, counselor and peer mediation trainer/advisor. They work in pairs and usually are assigned to cases according to grade level. Before peer mediators are allowed to mediate, they must complete 15 to 16 hours of peer mediation training and sit in and observe at least two mediation sessions. They are monitored by Mrs. Molock before they are allowed to mediate cases alone. Additionally, the peer mediation team meets every third Wednesday of each month after school to enhance skills and discuss any problems they may have encountered while mediating. Students may be referred for mediation by their teachers, classmates administrators staff and counselors. CRMS peer mediations also have the opportunity to attend the Maryland Peer Helpers Counselors Conference in Ocean City, Maryland.
We believe that peer mediation is a valuable resource that can and has helped reduce school violence, assisted in helping students learn how to resolve conflict peacefully and allowed for the peer mediators to be recognized as positive role models for their peers.
